Home Repairs
Illinois has a law called the Home Repair Fraud Act to protect homeowners from misrepresentation by those who perform home repairs. The law exists because homeowners typically have far less knowledge about home repairs than the professional and because of a history of fraud in the home repair industry.
The law applies to false statements made by the professional to induce a person to undertake home repairs, unreasonable charges by the professional (only on contracts over $4,000), and damages the professional makes to the house while repairing it. The penalties are higher if the homeowner is over 60.
