Practice Description:
Ms. Brimer leads the Strobl & Sharp bankruptcy and creditors' rights practice. A leader in her field, Ms. Brimer has over 24 years of experience as a bankruptcy and tax attorney. She was selected by her peers as Detroit's Best Lawyers 2014-15 Litigation and Controversy Tax Lawyer of the Year. Her expertise spans all phases of bankruptcy and tax planning such as tax preparation, audits and other areas of tax law. For Chapter 11 bankruptcies, corporate workouts and reorganizations, she represents both secured and unsecured creditors and debtors in a variety of industries. Because of her broad experience and knowledge, she understands the strategies and complexities that face both sides of the table.

Most recently, she was retained as counsel for the Retired Detroit Police Members Association in the City of Detroit, Michigan Chapter 9 proceeding. She advised creditor clients in the GM, Chrysler, Collins & Aikman LLC and Plastech Engineered Products Inc. bankruptcies. Since 2008, she has filed approximately 20 Chapter 11 debtor cases. To date, all but one of her Chapter 11 debtor cases successfully confirmed a plan of reorganization. Ms. Brimer and her team have also recently acted as the Chapter 11 debtors counsel for FormTech Industries, LLC (Delaware filing); By Tech, Inc.; Christian Love Fellowship Ministries, International; Doctors Referral Services, Inc. and Little Rock Baptist Charity Care Center, Inc.

As a seasoned attorney, she fights to minimize an organization's tax burden before various tax authorities such as the United States Tax Court and the Michigan Tax Tribunal. She also provides expertise in resolving tax collection disputes, including resolving levy and lien issues and payment plans with federal, state and local taxing authorities.

Prior to entering private practice, Ms. Brimer served for ten years as an attorney with the Office of Chief Counsel for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). While serving in the Office of Chief Counsel, Ms. Brimer was appointed as a Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) for the Eastern District of Michigan. During her service as a SAUSA, she represented the IRS and other federal agencies in all aspects of Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

Ms. Brimer also has unique expertise with cases based on the progressive Michigan Special Tools Lien Act and Michigan Molder?s Lien Act.

She actively supports a wide variety of causes. She serves on the host committee for the Detroit Public Safety Foundation, Women in Blue recognition event. The event recognizes the Detroit Police Department members for all the work they do on behalf of women and children. Annually, she chairs a powerlifting event to raise money for the Special Olympics, and has successfully raised over $20,000 for the nonprofit.

She is also a member of the board of directors for the Arab American Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS). As the ACCESS chair of the development committee, she led two successful capital campaigns which raised $4 million and $21 million, respectively. Ms. Brimer frequently writes and speaks on bankruptcy, creditors' rights and tax controversy and litigation for organizations such as the Federal Bar Association, Michigan Institute for Continuing Legal Education, the Michigan State Bar and various industry groups such as the Tooling, Manufacturing and Technology Association. She recently co-authored an article called "Measuring Service-Delivery Insolvency" in Chapter 9, in the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) Journal, Vol. XXXIII, No. 2, February 2014.
