Practice Description:  
Mr. Barone has been recognized for his achievements in OWI defense by several publications and organizations. In addition to being a Leading Lawyer, he has an "AV" (highest) rating from Martindale-Hubbell. He's also been rated "Seriously Outstanding" by SuperLawyers, "Outstanding/10.0" by AVVO and since 2009 has been included in the list of "America's Best Lawyers" by US News & World Report. Mr. Barone is the founding president of the Michigan Association of OWI attorneys and is a Sustaining Member for the College for DUI Defense.

Mr. Barone is the author of two books on DUI defense, including the two-volume treatise Defending Drinking Drivers and Michigan DUI Law: A Citizen's Guide. He's also written chapters in several publications on the subject of DUI and vehicular homicide. He is an adjunct professor at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School, where he teaches drunk driving law and practice. He also lectures at continuing education seminars throughout the state and country, and has provided expert commentary in newspapers, on television and on radio.

He is the author of a monthly DUI defense column for Michigan's Criminal Defense Newsletter and also served as executive editor for The DWI Journal: Law & Science (Whitaker Newsletters, Inc.), a nationally circulated legal periodical.

Mr. Barone has been certified as an instructor and practitioner of the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests in accordance with the standards set forth by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Partly as a result of this training, he has been judicially qualified as a court expert, allowing him to give opinion testimony before a jury regarding issues relating to DUI investigations and police officers' field sobriety testing protocols.

Mr. Barone is certified by the National Patent Analytical Corporation (the manufacturer of the DataMaster) to operate and perform essential diagnostic verifications and calibration checks on the BAC DataMaster.

As the founding president of the Michigan Association of OWI attorneys, Mr. Barone moderates a statewide listserve and participates in a national listserve of DUI practitioners, allowing him to exchange and share information about new and existing DUI laws, national and local trends in the law; and trial tactics.
