Mr. Sullivan is a partner in the firm's commercial litigation and business law practice groups. He has represented financial institutions, public corporations, media companies, health care providers, physician practice groups, governmental entities, small businesses, insurance companies and individuals.
Since joining WilliamsMcCarthy in 1979, he has consulted and represented clients in matters involving buy-sell agreements, partnership agreements, contractual matters, construction claims, business fraud, physician-hospital disputes, trade secrets, libel claims, employee non-competition agreements, employment matters, creditor's rights, fiduciary duties of corporate officers, unfair competition, Lanham Act, lender liability, contests for corporate control, business valuations, administrative tax disputes, contested estates, trade regulation, ERISA, insurance issues and shareholder rights.
For example, Mr. Sullivan has represented several national brokerage companies in state and federal courts involving employee non-competition clauses. In the fiduciary duty area, he consulted management in connection with claims against former corporate officers. He has also provided counsel and litigated claims involving the value of minority interests in closely held corporations. He routinely counsels corporate, institutional and small business clients on legal issues affecting their business operations.
Mr. Sullivan is a court certified mediator in both state and federal courts and in 2003 was appointed as a federal mediator for the Western Division of the Northern District of Illinois. He has participated in a wide variety of arbitrations and mediations of commercial, unfair competition, contract and business tort disputes.
Mr. Sullivan is an honors graduate of the University of Notre Dame and its law school. Other academic honors include receipt of the Wall Street Journal Award for Excellence in Finance, Beta Gamma Sigma, and being named a Notre Dame Scholar. He has been selected by his peers for inclusion in Leading Lawyers, a distinction awarded to less than five percent of all attorneys in Illinois. He has also been selected as an Illinois Super Lawyer by Law & Politics in the area of commercial litigation.
Mr. Sullivan is a former member of the firm's management committee. Other management experience includes current service as a director of a publicly traded bank holding company. He is a member of the executive committee and a former director of the Notre Dame Law Association, the alumni board of the Notre Dame Law School.
He is member of the trial bar of the Federal District Court, Northern District of Illinois and is admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit and the United States Supreme Court.

Mr. Sullivan is an active volunteer in his community having served on the boards of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, Rockford Area Arts Council, and the Natural Land Institute. He is a founding officer and director of the Friends of the Coronado Theater which in 2000 successfully completed an eighteen million dollar capital campaign to restore a landmark theater. He is also a trustee of the Smith Charitable Foundation.

Litigation Practice Group
Our lawyers in this group concentrate their practice in the area of complex litigation, at both the trial and appellate levels of the federal and state courts throughout the midwest. They have established precedents in important areas of the law and have developed a reputation for aggressive, cost-efficient representation in matters involving unfair competition, corporate control issues, personal injury, product liability, environmental and consumer safety, and corporate, commercial and bankruptcy litigation, as well as in the increasingly important area of the law of the workplace, including claims related to wrongful discharge and employment discrimination. Attorneys in this practice group have extensive expertise in the following areas:
Business Litigation - We represent businesses, directors and officers, and individuals in the trial and appellate branches of the state and federal courts and in administrative proceedings, arbitrations and mediations.
Insurance - We defend personal injury, product liability, professional misconduct and related matters and have extensive experience with insurance coverage litigation.
Environmental - We provide a full range of litigation and administrative services related to land-use planning including environmental issues such as hazardous waste disposal and super-fund litigation.
Employment - We represent employers in litigation, arbitration, and administrative proceedings related to the employment relationship, discrimination litigation, wrongful discharge cases, and employment agreements.
Banking - We provide a full range of legal services to financial institutions, including the defense of lender liability suits, structuring work-outs and full representation of major creditor collection actions.
Commercial - We prosecute or defend suits on contracts, claims of tortious interference, misrepresentation and fraud, unfair competition, shareholder disputes and suits for injunctive relief.
Complex Litigation - We provide a full range of services in complex cases, including securities, toxic tort, multi-district litigation, and professional liability.
Appellate - We represent appellants and respondents in courts of higher jurisdiction.
Family Law - We provide representation on divorce, child custody, separation agreements, child support, adoption, alimony, division of property, and pre-marital agreements.
Local Counsel - We routinely act as local counsel for national law firms and other firms outside of our federal district in complex litigation involving class-action, patents, anti-trust and the like.
