Mr. Hansen, of counsel, practices business law of all sorts, including purchase and sales of businesses, as well as business formation, residential and commercial real estate and development; estate planning, zoning and land use, and gaming law. Mr. Hansen has a long history of representing companies in the city of Joliet, and other Will County municipalities, including Empress Casino Joliet Corporation, Silver Cross Hospital, and the CenterPoint International Center, the largest master-planned inland port in North America. He also works with many small local businesses and is co-founder of the First Community Bank of Joliet. He helped establish minor league baseball in Joliet.

Mr. Hansen was in private legal practice with Michael W. Hansen PC and as a partner with the Joliet law firm of Herschbach, Tracy, Johnson, Bertani & Wilson. He was involved from the beginning with the founding of the Empress Casino and from August 1, 1994 until December 1, 1999 served as Vice President, Secretary and Chief Legal Officer for Empress Entertainment, Inc., Empress Casino Joliet Corporation and Empress Casino Hammond. Mr. Hansen was also responsible for the licensing and development of Empress Casino Hammond Corporation in 1995 and 1996.

Mr. Hansen is one of the founding directors of First Community Partners, Inc. and First Community Bank of Joliet. Mr. Hansen is the current Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Silver Cross Foundation and a director of the One Hundred Club of Will County. He is also on the boards of the Will County Center for Economic Development, Lewis University Board of Advisors, the University of St. Francis President's Board of Advisors and the Board of Advisors for Autobahn Country Club. He is a former Chairman or President of the Will County Center for Economic Development, Board of Directors of Joliet Catholic Academy, the Franciscan Learning Center, Crisis Line of Will County, the Notre Dame Club of Joliet and is a former board member of the Will County Chapter of Red Cross and Diocese of Joliet Finance Council and a former Troy Township Republican Precinct Committeeman.
Mr. Hansen and his wife Elizabeth were recipients of the 2008 De La Salle Award from Lewis University. Mr. Hansen also received the 2010 Christus Award from the Upper Room Crisis Hotline.
