René A. Torrado, Jr., a former President of the Chicago Bar Association, is a distinguished and respected member of the Chicago legal community. A 1969 graduate of the University of Notre Dame and a 1973 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, Rene began his legal career as a law clerk for U.S. District Judge James Lawrence King in the Southern District of Florida. Following his clerkship, he participated in the U.S. Department of Justice Honors Program as a trial attorney in the Antitrust Division and as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia.
After completing his government service in 1978, René represented plaintiffs in antitrust matters and defendants in criminal prosecutions in a Washington, DC law firm. In 1981, René moved to Chicago and continued his trial practice with Reuben & Proctor and then formed his own firm. In 1987, René joined Vedder, Price, Kaufman & Kammholz, where he remained as a trial lawyer until joining Corboy & Demetrio in 2003.
René has represented individuals and corporations in a broad spectrum of civil matters. His clients have included corporate executives in executive compensation matters, class actions, shareholder derivative actions, and securities litigation; and individuals in trade secret and business tort litigation. As a trial lawyer, his representation has included matters involving antitrust, securities, RICO, contract, and fraud claims.
He has also represented Chicago area professional sports teams in workers' compensation claims and personal injury actions. On behalf of trade associations, he has both prosecuted and defended commercial claims such as antitrust matters, contract claims, and constitutional claims.
His courtroom successes include a $20 million judgment on behalf of a commercial financial institution in a lawsuit against corporate and individual defendants accused of violating RICO, committing fraud, and breach of contract and an $8 million judgment on behalf of an inventor against a multi-national healthcare product manufacturer. Active in the Chicago Bar Association, (CBA), René has served as General Counsel of the Association from 1988 to1995, President from 1995 to1996 and chair of the Appellate Review Committee of the Judicial Evaluation Committee, where he is currently a member. With René as General Counsel, the CBA was successful in its constitutional challenge to a proposed voter initiative imposing term limits on members of the Illinois General Assembly. René was a member of the Special Committee on the Illinois Constitutional Convention and has been active in the Center for Conflict Resolution and the Chicago Inn of Court.
René is listed in "The Best Lawyers in America," an invitation-only, peer-selected publication. He is one of the top 5% of Trial Lawyers in Illinois as determined by Leading Lawyers, is an Illinois Super Lawyer, and has an AV rating - the highest possible for any attorney - from the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory.

Corboy & Demetrio is one of the nation's premier law firms. The firm represents individuals and their families in serious personal injury and wrongful death cases and is renowned for achievements in the courtroom and contributions to the community.
The rights, concerns and interests of the firm's clients are the core of its personal injury and wrongful death practice. Putting clients first has resulted in unparalleled and exceptional success - with the firm having acquired more than $3 billion in settlements and verdicts, of which nearly 600 were in excess of $1 million.
Among the firm's many other accomplishments, it has ranked first in the Chicago Lawyer Settlement Survey for the highest settlements in Illinois eight out of the past seventeen years, leading all other firms, and has ranked in the top four positions for all seventeen years. Thirteen attorneys- the largest number of attorneys for any Illinois personal injury law firm- are members of Leading Lawyers, a peer reviewed selection which recognizes only the top 5% of all Illinois lawyers. In addition, eleven partners have been selected by peer review to the Illinois Super Lawyers list and four of the firm's young attorneys are Illinois Super Lawyer Rising Stars.
Corboy & Demetrio is the only Chicago law firm to include four former Chicago Bar Association Presidents, and is also the only law firm to include four attorneys who have served as President of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association.
The firm was founded by nationally acclaimed Chicago trial lawyers Philip H. Corboy and Thomas A. Demetrio. Tom is hailed by the prestigious Lawdragon as the powerhouse of aviation and medical negligence law. In the windy city, he's the name for everything from medical malpractice claims to aviation disasters. He is Chicago's top trial lawyer who stands alone atop the Chicago trial bar for 100 million reasons, including the biggest injury verdict ever upheld by the Illinois Supreme Court. In 2010, Tom was presented with two awards from the Illinois Jury Verdict Reporter/Law Bulletin Publishing Company for Trial Lawyer Excellence: one for the largest wrongful death settlement ever in Illinois ($25.25 million) and one for acquiring five or more verdicts in excess of $5 million since 1990.
Philip Harnett Corboy, Jr., like Tom and partner David R. Barry, Jr., is a member of the invitation-only American College of Trial Lawyers, the country's pre-eminent organization of trial lawyers that limits its membership to the top 1% of all trial lawyers. Phil and Tom are also profiled in the invitation-only, peer selected list in the book, The Best Lawyers in America. In 2011, Tom was named by Best Lawyers in America as the Chicago Medical Malpractice Lawyer of the Year.
Corboy & Demetrio is and always has been committed and dedicated to serving the community. The firm establishes and funds scholarships, fellowships and endowments at local and national mentoring programs, high schools, and universities, including all six Chicago law schools. Partners, associates and office staff serve on Boards, raise funds, tutor, and lend a hand wherever needed for a variety of charities and nonprofit organizations. Partnering with Cristo Rey Jesuit High School's internship program, in 2006 the firm established a pro bono department, which helps the indigent and elderly with legal matters that affect their day-to-day quality of life.
