Practice Description:  
George T. Brugess has been a partner at Cogan and Power, P.C. since November of 2015. An experienced Federal Employer Liability Act litigator, he has more than 30 years of experience representing plaintiffs in railroad-related personal injury cases throughout the country.

After graduating from DePaul law school in 1981, George handled his first FELA case for an Amtrak coach cleaner injured at Chicago Union Station. In 1985, George was appointed General Attorney for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in Chicago. At the CNW, George litigated catastrophic cases for the railroad, including the Fox River Grove school bus accident case. He also had system-wide responsibility on the CNW for occupational illness cases, managing outside counsel in six states.

After the Union Pacific Railroad acquired the CNW, George continued as General Attorney for the UPRR in Chicago until 1996. Since then, George has successfully litigated FELA cases to verdict on behalf of injured railroad workers. In November 2014, George opened his own practice.

George’s jury verdicts include $33 million for a switchman who suffered double leg amputation, $3.9 million for multiple injuries in a van accident, $1.5 million for a back injury caused by excess locomotive vibration and $1.25 million for a partial thumb amputation. In addition, he has secured many million dollar settlements for injured railroad workers.

George did not have much time to settle into his role as partner at Cogan & Power, P.C. On his first day with the firm, George started a trial with his new partner, John Power, and achieved a record FELA verdict in Cook County of $24.5 million. The previous record FELA verdict in Illinois was $15 million.

George has tried jury cases to verdict in Wyoming, Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Iowa and Illinois state and federal courts.

George is admitted to practice in Illinois state and federal courts and he is admitted to practice in federal courts in Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and Nebraska as well as the Seventh and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
